Additional Fees
In 2000, the average surgeon/physician fee
calculated by the American Society of Plastic
Surgeons (ASPS) was $1,985. However, this average
does not include many additional fees. It is
crucial you ask your doctor if these fees are
included in your quote. While some of the services
listed below are essential (anaesthesia, for
instance), others are not always necessary (nursing
services). What you end up paying for is therefore
up to you.
Some potential extra costs include:
- Consultation fees: $50 - $100. This fee
is usually reimbursed if the patient decides
to undergo surgery.
- Compressive garments: These can cost anywhere
from $10 for a facial garment, to $150 for
an abdominal garment. Quality garments are
available cheaply, and many patients buy one
or two extra pieces, due to soiling from fluid
drainage.
- Anaesthesia: Under general anaesthesia,
additional "Sedation fees" of $400
- $1,000 will apply. Local anaesthesia is
not only safer but much cheaper, since most
doctors will perform the anaesthesia themselves.
- Facility fees: Up to $1,000 in some cases.
- Laboratory testing: $200 - $1500. Includes
blood testing, which is required for tumescent
liposuction.
- Nursing and staff fees: Most larger clinics
or hospitals will charge for post-operational
nursing and staff services.
- Touch-ups: Only about a quarter of liposuction
patients require touch-ups. Touch-ups are
small, simple procedures cost about one-third
the price of the original surgery. They are
usually needed by larger patients and take
place 2-3 months after the initial surgery.
