Facts about Breast Augmentation
Once thought to be reserved for only the richest and most famous among
us, breast augmentation, clinically referred to as augmentation mammoplasty,
is becoming an attractive and feasible option for the average woman who
simply wants to boost her self-confidence by enhancing her appearance.
Why Breast Augmentation?
Although there may be a wide variety of reasons women choose to have
breast augmentation surgery, it usually comes down to a general dissatisfaction
with the size and/or shape of their breasts. Women who never developed
the breast size they desired, or those who have lost breast volume as
a result of pregnancy or extreme weight loss, may seek out breast augmentation
as an effective solution to all of their breast woes.
The Consultation
During the initial consultation, the patient will sit down with her plastic
surgeon and discuss her complaints about the current state of her breasts
as well as her vision for the breasts she desires. Ideally, the surgeon
will listen to the patient’s concerns and expectations and then
offer his recommendations, keeping in mind the patient’s wishes.
His advice will be based on what is suitable for her overall body shape.
The discussion will cover the various types of implants, their differences,
and the advantages and disadvantages associated with each, so that the
patient can make an informed decision. The surgeon should explain exactly
where the implants will be placed and where the incision will be made.
The patient should be walked through every step of the procedure and the
recovery period so that she will feel reassured on the day of her surgery
and know what to expect during the days and weeks following the procedure.
The Procedure
Augmentation mammoplasty is usually performed as either an inpatient or
outpatient procedure. The patient will undergo general anesthesia or receive
a local anesthetic. The surgeon makes an incision and inserts artificial
breast implants under the breast (subglandular) or behind the chest muscle
(submuscular). The incision is made under the breast or, in some cases,
around the nipple or in the pit of the arm. The most common incision site
is beneath the breast, where the inevitable scarring are best hidden.
After the implants have been inserted, the surgeon will close the incision
with either stitches or surgical tape. The entire procedure can usually
be performed within two hours.
Recovery
Depending on the individual and the size and nature of the implants, as
well as whether the implant procedure was subglandular or submuscular,
recovery for breast augmentation can range from a few weeks to a few months.
During the recovery period, patients are often asked to wear a special
support bra and refrain from any strenuous activities while their breasts
heal and the body becomes accustomed to the implants. Patients should
expect their breasts to be quite sore and tender for up to a few weeks
following the surgical procedure.
Cost of the Procedure
The cost of breast augmentation can vary widely depending on certain factors.
The procedure can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 dollars and can
fluctuate based on the geographical location of the patient as well as
the fees of the chosen cosmetic surgeon. This cost includes the anesthesia,
surgery, and post-operative care.
