The Breakdown on Breast Lifts
A breast lift, clinically referred to as mastopexy, is a growing trend
among those women who wish to improve the shape and tone of their breasts
without artificial implants. This cosmetic procedure is becoming increasingly
popular amongst women over the age of 40, although women of all ages undergo
the procedure each year.
Why Breast Lifts?
As women age, their skin loses elasticity, and inevitably, the breasts
begin to sag. This can be especially true for women who have had several
children, as well as for those who have breastfed for long periods of
time. Dramatic weight gain and loss can also have a drooping effect on
the breasts. Moreover, genetic makeup and heredity can result in sagging
breasts as well.
For women who are concerned about these seemingly negative effects, a
breast lift can give the appearance of fuller, firmer breasts without
the costs and risks associated with implants. Many simply want to regain
the contour of their youth, not make their breasts appear larger. However,
for those who do want slightly larger breasts, breast augmentation can
be performed in combination with a breast lift to simultaneously enlarge
and lift the breasts.
The Consultation
During the initial consultation, the plastic surgeon will sit down with
the patient to discuss any concerns she may have about the current state
of her breasts as well as her ideal desired results. This will give the
doctor a good indication as to whether or not the patient is a good candidate
for the procedure and whether her expectations are realistic. The cosmetic
surgeon will explain the procedure in detail and ensure that all of the
patient’s questions have been answered satisfactorily. In addition,
the plastic surgeon will inquire about the patient’s medical history
to ensure that it does not pose any serious risks associated with the
procedure. Pictures and measurements of the breasts may be taken for the
patient’s file in order to provide before and after comparisons
following the procedure.
The Procedure
During a mastopexy procedure, the patient will undergo general anesthesia.
The cosmetic surgeon will make a small incision under the breast or armpit
in order to remove any of the unnecessary skin that is causing the breast
to sag. Special care is taken to ensure that the incision follows the
natural line of the breast. The remaining skin is then stretched and stitched
together, a process that has a tightening effect on the breasts, making
them appear firmer and shapelier. The nipple and areola will then be moved
upwards to the center of the patient’s newly-shaped breasts, and
the areola may be minimized if necessary to achieve the most natural look
possible.
Recovery
Following the breast lift procedure, the stitches will be removed within
two weeks, after which time, the patient may begin to return to their
normal routine, although breasts may still be sore, especially around
the incision site. If intense pain is experienced at any point following
the surgery, the patient should consult her doctor immediately.
Cost of the Procedure
Mastopexy procedures typically cost around $5000, and could be slightly
more or less, often depending on the surgeon’s reputation and geographical
location. For patients choosing implants in combination with the breast
lift, the cost will be substantially higher.
