Neck Liposuction Procedure, Candidates, and After-Effects

Today, liposuction is a relatively common procedure. Many parts of the body can be tweaked until a sought level of satisfaction is reached. The neck is a popular choice for liposuction amongst people between 30 and 50 years of age. However, not all individuals are suitable candidates for the procedure.

Am I a good candidate for neck liposuction?
A person must have a certain amount of neck fat to undergo a neck liposuction procedure. The platysma muscle in the neck, which extends from the lower jawbone all to the collarbone, must not be exposed or damaged during the liposuction process. Therefore, there must be enough fat as to not put this muscle at risk. Only a medical doctor can determine whether or not you are an appropriate candidate for neck liposuction.

Neck LiposuctionWhat is a neck liposuction procedure?
Neck liposuction is a fairly simple procedure that involves removing fat from under the chin; hence, it eliminates the look of a double chin and/or jowls. The 30-minute procedure usually consists of the doctor making a small incision under the chin and in front of the ears. A narrow tube called a cannula, connected to a vacuum device, sucks out the excess fat in the neck region.

Are there any after-effects associated with neck liposuction?
Even though neck liposuction is relatively easy and painless, some patients experience a certain degree of discomfort after the procedure. There may be some bruising and swelling which should disappear within 3 weeks. Other more serious side effects may include numbness, bleeding, crusting, soreness, a burning sensation, and infection. The surgeon may prescribe medication to prevent infections.

A number of irregularities can occur as a result of neck liposuction, such as damage to the nerves, ruffles under the neck, divot in the neck (due to the removal of too much fat) as well as other potential problems. In certain cases, the problem can be rectified; do not hesitate to consult with your surgeon.

Visible results should take place 2 to 3 weeks following surgery, but for some individuals, the end results can take from 6 months to a full year. The amount of fat removed often determines how long it will take before the desired appearance is achieved.
