Obesity Clinics
Taking into account that 97 million Americans are overweight or obese,
the field of weight loss can be a prolific source of wealth for many entrepreneurs.
Qualified or not, everyone wants to get a piece of the pie. There are
doctors, psychologists, dieticians, physiatrists and chiropractors who
claim to be experts in weight loss; many of them offer their services
in obesity clinics.
There are diets of every imaginable kind, including the blood type and
lemonade cleansing diet; in fact, the website “Everydiet”
publishes 11 pages of diets only. There are super foods such as the Acai
berry, certar4win nuts and even cabbage that boast weight loss benefits.
There are diet centers like L.A. Weight Loss that promotes its own diet.
There are separate men’s diet and women’s diets. Believe it
or not, there is a Martini Diet and a Cookie Diet! You can go it alone
with eDiet or join a group such as “Weight Watchers”. Some
people try acupuncture or a spinal adjustment.
Exercise centers such as Curves are popular, and gyms are too numerous
to count. In these facilities, you can buy drinks, shakes, supplements,
and specially prepared foods that claim to induce weight loss.
The fact is there is a weight loss program to fit every palate and personality
type out there. However, through all of the above methods, you may or
may not learn the true causes of overweight and obesity, and you may not
be pressed to understand the necessity of a permanent lifestyle change.
You may never be informed that overweight is the result of eating more
calories than your body can burn, and that a certain amount of physical
activity is required to burn the ingested calories.
Obesity Clinics - Clinical Programs
The key word in clinical programs is ‘professionalism’. Some
obesity clinics provide services by a licensed professional, be it a physician,
psychologist, or nutritionist, who may or may not have advanced training
in weight loss or obesity. The professional in charge usually leads of
a team of service providers. Obesity clinics are often affiliated with
a hospital or university.
Only a medical doctor can offer medical advice and prescribe medication.
Thus, if the leader of the obesity clinic is a weight loss professional
but not an MD, he or she cannot write a medical prescription, but can
provide advice on non-prescription medications, such as supplements and
natural herbs. In many cases, the client must be referred to a licensed
physician for medical consultation regarding surgery or serious health
issues related to obesity. An MD who specializes in weight loss is called
a Bariatric doctor.
Obesity Clinics - Non-clinical Programs
Obesity clinics that are non-medical in their focus are referred to as
non-clinical programs. They are quite popular and often franchised. Although
they tend to be less costly than their clinical counterparts, costs can
vary from one clinic to another. They may employ health care providers,
but they usually rely on “counselors” to provide services
to their clients, offering counsel on a one-to-one basis, or to a group
of individuals. They often have their own diet which clients must follow,
and may sell their own prepared food, meal replacements or supplements.
The more popular programs offer advice on nutrition, exercise, behavior
modification and lifestyle change. Literature and lectures are typically
part of non-clinical programs.
The Last Word on Obesity Clinics
If you need to lose weight, there are many options available, but a consultation
with your personal health care provider is recommended before choosing
a method of weight loss. One important fact to remember: obesity clinics
are only as good as the amount of effort you put into losing weight.
