Obesity Problems: The Consequences of Obesity

It is no secret that obesity has become a widespread global problem, and obesity-related diseases are putting a strain on the fragile financial budgets of the world. The great cost of medical care in the treatment of debilitating illnesses associated with obesity problems will continue to drain our economy unless society realizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Common Diseases Associated with Obesity
The list continues to grow. We are spending valuable healthcare dollars to treat the obesity problems described below:

  • Obesity Problems Heart disease includes hypertension, high cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, stroke, and coronary artery disease that can result in surgery or sudden death.
  • Cancers such as breast, colon and endometrial are the most common.
  • Gallbladder Disease including gallstones.
  • Diabetes and all of its complications, including eye problems, prolonged healing, and blood circulation problems often in the lower extremities that can result in the amputation of limbs.
  • Osteoarthritis affects multiple joints in the body causing pain and inability to use the joint, resulting in joint replacement surgery that entails an unpredictable outcome, longer recovery, and a higher risk for complications in obese patients.
  • Gynecological Problems in obese females includes infertility issues that can lead to IVF, a costly procedure with no guarantee of a viable fetus.
  • Sleep Apnea results in fatigue and loss of energy.
  • Liver Disease, an accumulation of fat in the liver, results in inflammation and potential non-alcoholic cirrhosis.
  • Depression due to societal rejection results in lack of self-worth.

Quality of Life for the Obese
In many cases, obesity problems begin in childhood. School bullying directed at students who are overweight shatters self-confidence and instills anxiety, which eventually leads to psychological issues. Instead of losing weight, a bullied child often gains weight, using food as comfort.

In other situations, parents are responsible for obesity problems by being inadequate role models for their children. Poor eating habits and a lack of interest in physical activity can cause a whole family to add on the pounds. Moreover, when parents adopt an aloofness towards the excess weight, the children are not inspired to lead a healthy lifestyle; in fact, the opposite is perpetuated. They do not learn to make healthy food choices or the importance of exercise. Consequently, the children begin to lose not only self-esteem, but also interest in social events; they may even deter from making friendships.

Suggestions and Solutions
Thirty years ago, our obesity rate was 10% of the population; today it is 30%. How can we stop or even turn around the increasing numbers? Here are some suggestions:

  • Lead by example. Parents must realize that the onus is on them to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is not a teacher’s responsibility to counsel overweight children, and not all school budgets can afford a nutritionist.
  • Make exercise a family affair. Do activities together. Riding bicycles, hiking, walking, bowling, and all forms of sport are an ideal way for a family to keep in shape, and enjoy time together as well.
  • Visit farm markets in season. Teach children the food groups with a “show and tell” activity - make it fun. They will learn to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy food.
  • Reward good behavior. Incentive is an ideal tool; however, remember to recompense with non-food items.

The solution to an obesity problem is not always obvious or easy. But, an encouraging first step is to abide to this rule: burn more calories than you consume by engaging in physical activity. Early education is instrumental – the young can easily adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Hopefully, the fundamentals will carry through to adulthood and passed to future generations. Apathy is not an option.
