Obesity Statistics

Considering the ongoing attention given to healthy living over the past decade, one would think that obesity trends would decrease. On the contrary, obesity statistics show an increase from the previous ten years. According to The Obesity Society, more than 65% of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese, and of that number, 33% fall into the category of obese. Over 20% of children and adolescents, ages 6-11 and 12-19, are obese. Even more alarming is the fact that these numbers are rising.

Obesity in adults is determined by the Body Mass Index or BMI, which is a calculation of the relationship between height and weight. An individual with a BMI over 30 is deemed obese.

Adults

  • Nearly one third of American adults are obese (BMI over 30.)
  • All adults over 20: 61.3 million (30.5%)
  • Women over 20: 34.7 million (33.4%)
  • Men over 20: 26.6 million (27.5%)

Children

  • Approximately 15.3% of children (aged 6–11) and 15.5% of adolescents (aged 12–19) were overweight in 2000.
  • A study suggests that one in four overweight children is already showing early signs of type II diabetes, while 60% already have a risk factor for heart disease.

In the gathering of obesity statistics, people often report themselves taller or lighter than they actually are, making it difficult for experts to attain accurate results. Nonetheless, numbers indicate that, since 1960, adults in America are now one inch taller and 25 pounds heavier. The World Health Organization claims that the overall increase in the body mass index now places obesity amongst major health problems such as malnutrition, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, iron deficiency, unsafe water, unsafe sex, alcohol and smoking.

Health Complications Related to Obesity

Excess weight puts additional stress on every part of the body, resulting in various medical problems, including the following:

  • Type 2 diabetes - 80%
  • High blood pressure and related cardiovascular disease – 70%
  • Sleep apnea caused by obstruction of respiratory tract
  • Certain cancers, such as breast and colon – 42%
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Depression

Death

  • An estimated 300,000 deaths per year are attributable to obesity.
  • Obese individuals have a 50% to 100% increased risk of death from all causes, compared with normal-weight individuals.

Obesity statistics have shown a rise in mortality rates. Obese individuals have a 10% to 50% increase in death risk from all causes, many of which cardiovascular, compared to individuals with a healthy weight. In the United States, there are 112,000 additional deaths each year related to obesity.

Economic Costs
With regard to obesity statistics, health care costs have also risen in the U.S. Direct costs related to obesity include diagnosis, treatment and prevention such as medications, doctor appointments and hospital and home care. Indirect costs take into account the loss of wages by individuals unable to work due to sickness or disability, and loss of income due to premature death. Because overweight and obesity medical problems continue to increase, the costs also increase as such:

  • Direct costs: $125 billion
  • Indirect costs: $90 billion
  • Total costs: $215 billion

Individuals who are deemed obese pay $1,429 or 42% more in health costs than those of normal weight. According to National Institute of Health regarding obesity, additional insurance costs are as follows:

  • Medicare pays $1,723 more to obese recipients than to normal weight ones
  • Medicaid pays $1,021 more to obese recipients than to normal weight ones
  • Private insurance companies pay $1,140 more to obese recipients than to normal weight ones
