Discussing Tummy Tucks

Many people choose to undergo liposuction as a means of ridding themselves of excess fat from specific areas of the body. Tummy tuck is a common surgical procedure that removes excess fat from the abdominal region and gives the tummy a flatter appearance.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
Before a tummy tuck can be performed, the aspiring candidate should consult a doctor in order to determine whether or not they meet the requirements for successful surgery. For optimum results, the candidate should have firm skin that offers some elasticity. Young people are typically ideal candidates because of superior skin elasticity. Patients undergoing tummy tucks should also be in good overall physical and psychological health. People with heart disease or diabetes tend to be at a greater level of risk regarding this surgery.

Tummy TucksWhat is a tummy tuck procedure?
The cosmetic surgeon first makes a small incision in the abdominal area of the body in order to insert a cannula (small tube) into the layer of fat under the skin. This instrument breaks up the fat deposits while a suction device on the end of the cannula sucks out the excess fat. The surgeon shapes the tummy until the desired results are met. Once the procedure is completed, the incision is closed, either with surgical thread or surgical tape, depending on the size of the incision. In most cases, a tummy tuck lasts between one and two hours.

Are there any after-effects associated with tummy tucks?
Typical side effects following abdominal liposuction are swelling, bruising, and pain around the area of the incision. Ucommon after effects include blood clots, muscle damage, scarring, nerve damage, asymmetry, bleeding, and infection. Usually, the symptoms will last between three to six weeks, although it is possible, in some rare cases, for the swelling to last for up to six months.

It is not recommended that patients return to work or continue to go about their daily activities until about two weeks after the surgery.

Despite the fact that a tummy tuck removes fat deposits from the abdominal area permanently, an individual can still gain weight following the surgery. It is therefore important to exercise regularly and adopt a long-term healthy diet in order to continue to maintain a favorable weight.
